Week 1/52: Titanic rising

So to kick off my new-album-per-week blog, I'm going back to lat year to visit an album I didn't check out during it's initial release. The album initially got really positive reviews; but with descriptions of it being "chamber pop" and "baroque pop" I avoided it because I literally didn't know what those genres were. Which is a shame because this album is actually really, really good.

This is the fourth album Weyes blood (Natalie Mering) has released but the first time I'd heard of her, and for good reason: this albums is masterful. As the album art suggests, the songs presented are floaty and colourful, with (nearly) all of them having Natalie's stunning voice floating through them. Her vocal presence can't really be understated on this album, not only the sound of her voice, but her lyrics are too- they're clever and meaningful and deep but still down to earth, and often sweet- "True love is making a comeback", followed by more sour and pessimistic- "For only half because the rest just feel bad". The album is littered with clever refrains and caveats like this.

But if we're talking about tracks, we've got to talk about Movies. This is one of the songs people describe as transcendent and for (very) good reason- the track exemplifies Mering's ability to compose and sing and write, it truly takes you somewhere else for it's runtime, it's beautifully nostagliac yet hopeful for the future, and Natalie's voice just floats over the top, it's truly a masterpiece of a song.

If I had to say one thing I didn't like about the album, I'd say it can be a bit too floaty at times, but besides that the album just demonstrates such a warmth and musical intellegence, there's nothing too challenging to listen to either so I don't think there's someone I wouldn't recommend this too. Check it out!
