Week 2/52: The Okayest Feeling

Alright, so this is an album I know for a fact that none of you have heard of. What it is, however, is a comfy and charming mix of lo-fi, folk and bedroom music. The two people In the cover are Caleb and Kina, the american guy and polish girl who made this album by emailing each other their respective parts: Kina on vocals, and Caleb on "most of" the instrumentals. And together, they've managed to make a supremely comfy string of lo-fi songs.

The songs are all based around guitar melodies, but aren't afraid to delve into electronics, horn sounds, weird bits of noise, what sound like field recordings and more instrumental parts I'm probably forgetting. But, by far, the most enchanting instrument on this album is Kina's voice: a mix of her softly spoken, almost whispered words combined with the gritty recordings give the whole album a lullaby-esque quality. Not to mention Kina's lyrics; they're also incredibly lullaby- like, and often end up being sweetly poetic- as you'd imagine with songs like "Kina's lullaby" and "a poem". Her lyrics are often deeply personal and vulnerable, circling around the two's relationship, longing to be together: " the way you talk// the way you cry// the way you show me around your mind" and " will i feel his warmth if i put on his clothes? and will i ever hear again that he is proud of me?"

As I've said, the production is incredibly lo-fi, which definitely adds to the charm of the album, don't get me wrong; but it does make Kina's lyrics somewhat hard to hear at times, on top of her accented singing, and Caleb's instrumentals are occasionally a bit grating with just how noisy they are, even when quiet. But there's always something to appreciate in the songs even if you aren't enjoying one part- the lack of precussion gives the songs a pretty loose form for the guitar melodies to just float around in. There are so many clever lyrical themes to explore as well as really well put together instrumentals, it's an album you really can just get lost in, I'd recommend it to anyone that likes guitar music. Overall very sweet.
